Myopia Control Prevents Risk of Ocular Disease

Cataracts
The rate of progression of myopia has been linked to the development of cataracts. The higher the level of myopia in a child, the faster the rate cataracts can develop when they get older.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is when the eye develops an unusually high pressure, where this pressure can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss. Nearsighted people have a 2-3x greater risk at Glaucoma.

Detached Retina
Levels of myopia also have a correlation to detached retinas. A detached retina is when the retina pulls away from the eyes tissue, often resulting in permanent vision loss.
Another way myopia can be controlled is by using soft, multifocal contact lenses, which your child wears during the day. By altering the near, middle, and peripheral focus, in addition to correcting distance vision, the eyes are forced to adjust. This slows down the elongation in the eye over time and is an effective means to control myopia.
The new myopia management lens specially designed for children.
The new and innovative freeform design of MyoKids ® by ZEISS is customized for growing eyes and applies the principles of Accommodative Lag Management: the new design provides optimum control of the accommodative lag during near vision tasks while still providing clear and comfortable vision at all distances. The reduction of accommodative lag is known to result in a potential reduction of myopia progression. Progressive addition lenses have been developed and successfully tested for myopia management in the last 20 years based on the assumption that alleviating children's intense near vision tasks can be beneficial for managing myopia progression. ZEISS MyoKids lenses are new and innovative progressive addition lenses specially designed for children's needs.
MiyoSmart is an innovative spectacle lens for myopia control developed by Hoya. Based on a two-year clinical trial results, MiyoSmart is proven to curb myopia progression by an average of 60% with its award-winning D.I.M.S. (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology. MiyoSmart is comprised of a central optical zone for correcting refractive error and multiple defocus segments evenly surrounding the central zone (extending to the mid-periphery) of the lens to control myopia progression.
This provides clear vision and myopic defocus simultaneously at all viewing distances. The lens makes use of the natural homeostatic mechanism known as “emmetropisation”, whereby the eyeball adapts and shapes to receive focused images as it does for normal vision.
All you need to do is:
1. Spend more time outdoors, minimum 2 hours a day.
2. Take breaks from long intensive screen time or near-work.
3. Take note of ergonomics, such as proper lighting, posture, keeping the recommended working distance are very important to keep your eyes healthy while doing the near-work.
4. Get regular eye check-ups to ensure that myopia or other vision problems are detected and treated early, reducing the worsening of vision, myopia progression and potential complications of high myopia.
Vision therapy is used to help control myopia. Vision Therapy is a program of progressive eye exercises individualized for each patient designed to retrain or help the patient develop or improve upon particular visual skills or to improve the processing and interpretation of visual information.
Low doses of Atropine (as low as .01%) for children with Myopia have been proven to slow the progression of their myopia and help to prevent their nearsightedness from deteriorating with minimal side effects. Atropine drops are generally given to patients at night and help relax the eye muscles.
Myopia Control At Brampton Family Eye Care Starts with You – The Parent
Your child’s eyes are his/her gateway into the world of learning. When your child’s vision is not functioning properly, learning and participation in recreational activities will suffer. Children are not likely to recognize vision problems like myopia, and it is, therefore, the responsibility of parents and teachers to recognize signs of visual problems in their children.
Children’s Eyesight May Change, Less Often With Myopia Control
Because changes in your child’s vision can occur without you or your child noticing them, your child should visit the eye doctor every year or more frequently if specific problems or risk factors exist. Myopia control attempts to reduce the number of changes that may occur in your child’s vision. With a successful myopia control program, Dr. Basra can provide your child with amazing vision, track your child’s rate of myopia, and provide a clear road to healthy eyesight and a successful future.
